O Level Chemistry (5070): The Complete Guide for Pakistani Students
Chemistry is one of the three core sciences almost every O Level student in Pakistan sits — and it is the one where marks are most often lost unnecessarily. Not because the syllabus is impossibly hard, but because students memorise reactions without understanding them, and walk into the exam without knowing exactly how each paper works.
This guide covers what Cambridge O Level Chemistry (syllabus code 5070) actually asks of your child, and how to prepare for it properly.
What is O Level Chemistry 5070?
Cambridge O Level Chemistry is the two-year chemistry qualification taken by students at Cambridge-affiliated schools across Pakistan, usually alongside Physics and Biology. It is set and marked by Cambridge International (CAIE), and grades run from A* to E.
It matters more than most students realise: the concepts built here — the mole, acids and bases, redox, basic organic chemistry — are exactly the foundations A Level Chemistry assumes on day one. A shaky O Level almost always becomes a painful AS year.
The exam: three papers, no hiding places
Under the current 2026–2028 syllabus, every candidate takes three components:
Paper 1 — Multiple Choice. 40 questions, 40 marks, worth 30% of the qualification. Sounds friendly; isn’t. MCQ papers punish half-understood concepts because every wrong option is written to catch a specific misconception.
Paper 2 — Theory. Short-answer and structured questions, 80 marks, worth 50%. This is where the qualification is won or lost. Examiners want precise chemical language and complete working for calculations — “the reaction gets faster because particles move more” scores nothing; “rate increases because more particles have energy greater than the activation energy, so the frequency of successful collisions rises” scores full marks.
Paper 3 or Paper 4 — Practical. 40 marks, worth 20%. Your child’s school enters them for either the hands-on Practical Test or the written Alternative to Practical. Either way, the skills are the same: accurate observation, correct units, and conclusions that follow from the data — skills that must be practised, not read about.
What’s in the syllabus
The 5070 syllabus runs from states of matter, atomic structure and bonding through stoichiometry into the wider subject. In practice, the topics group into four blocks:
- The foundations — states of matter, atoms, elements and compounds, and stoichiometry (the mole). Roughly the first year of teaching, and the block everything else stands on.
- Physical chemistry — electrochemistry, chemical energetics, rate of reaction and equilibrium.
- Inorganic patterns — acids, bases and salts, the Periodic Table, metals and their reactivity.
- Organic chemistry and analysis — fuels and hydrocarbons through alcohols and acids, the chemistry of the environment, plus experimental techniques and chemical analysis.
Most students find stoichiometry and mole calculations the hardest block — and it is also the most heavily rewarded, because calculation marks come with clear method steps that a well-drilled student can bank every time.
The four mistakes we see most often
After years of teaching O Level chemistry to students across Pakistan and the Gulf, the same patterns come up again and again: leaving mole calculations “for later” (they never get easier untaught); writing everyday English instead of chemical language in Paper 2; ignoring the practical paper because “it’s only 20%” (it is the easiest 20% on the syllabus to secure); and starting past papers in the final two months instead of after every completed topic.
How to prepare — a realistic plan
From the start of the final year: finish the syllabus with at least three months to spare, keep a single notebook of definitions and equations in exam wording, do topical past-paper questions immediately after each topic, and switch to full timed papers in the last eight weeks — marking against the real mark scheme, not by feel.
