IGCSE Chemistry (0620) vs O Level Chemistry (5070): Which Should Your Child Take?

If your child’s school offers a choice — or you’re choosing between schools — you’ve probably asked which chemistry qualification is “better”: Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) or Cambridge O Level Chemistry (5070). Both are set by Cambridge International, both are accepted for A Level progression and IBCC equivalence in Pakistan, and both cover broadly the same chemistry. The real differences are in how they examine it.

The biggest difference: tiers

O Level 5070 has one route. Every candidate takes the same three components: Paper 1 (multiple choice, 40 marks, 30%), Paper 2 (theory, 80 marks, 50%), and a practical component worth 20% — either the hands-on Practical Test or the written Alternative to Practical, whichever the school enters.

IGCSE 0620 has two. Schools enter each student for either the Core tier (Papers 1 and 3) or the Extended tier (Papers 2 and 4), plus the same style of practical choice (Practical Test or Alternative to Practical). Core caps the highest achievable grade at a C; Extended keeps the full range to A* open.

That tiering is IGCSE’s blessing and its trap. A student who finds chemistry heavy going can sit Core and still bank a respectable grade — but a capable student left in Core is locked out of the top grades no matter how well they perform. If your child is on IGCSE, confirm their tier with the school well before entries close.

Same chemistry, different feel

Content overlap is large: both syllabuses run from states of matter, atomic structure and stoichiometry through energetics, acids and salts and the Periodic Table into organic chemistry — and 0620 was restructured for 2026, bringing the two closer than ever. The differences students actually feel:

  • Question style. 0620 leans a little more on data handling and application in unfamiliar contexts; 5070 rewards precise recall and structured written answers slightly more heavily.
  • The practical dimension. Both put real weight on experimental skills, and in both, the practical/Alternative to Practical paper is the most learnable component on the syllabus — pure technique, endlessly practisable.
  • Cohort and timing. In Pakistan, O Level remains the dominant route in most Cambridge schools; IGCSE is standard in international-curriculum schools and among overseas Pakistani families (it is the route most of our Gulf-based students follow).

So which is “better”?

Neither, universally — universities and the IBCC treat both as equivalent. The honest answer is that the school usually decides for you, and the qualification matters far less than how well it is taught. A well-prepared 5070 student will beat a coasting Extended-0620 student every time, and vice versa.

Where the choice genuinely exists: a student aiming at A Level sciences should be on a route that keeps A* accessible (Extended, if IGCSE) and should treat mole calculations and practical skills as non-negotiable either way — those are the bridges into AS Chemistry.
