How we teach Chemistry
Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) gives students their first real command of how matter behaves. Before any of that matters, though, there is a decision to understand — and it is the single most consequential thing about this syllabus.
Core or Extended is a grade ceiling, not a difficulty setting. Entered for Core, a student sits Papers 1 and 3 and the highest grade available to them is a C. Entered for Extended, they sit Papers 2 and 4 and the full A* to G range is open. That entry decision is usually made by the school, sometimes earlier than families expect, and it quietly determines what your child can walk away with no matter how hard they work in the exam hall. A great deal of our Chemistry Cambridge IGCSE online tuition is about getting students ready to be entered for Extended, and then coping with it once they are.
The syllabus was restructured for 2026, so anyone sitting from this year forward is on revised content — worth checking that your child’s notes and past-paper practice match. It runs from states of matter, atomic structure and bonding through stoichiometry and the mole, into electrochemistry, energetics, acids and bases, the Periodic Table and metals, then out to the chemistry of the environment and organic chemistry. Every candidate, whichever tier, also sits a practical component: either Paper 5, a real laboratory test, or Paper 6, the written Alternative to Practical. Both are worth the same 20%.
For students learning with us online, Paper 6 is usually the route their centre offers, and it rewards something specific: not lab technique, but the ability to read an experiment on paper — spot the variable that wasn’t controlled, read a burette scale correctly, explain why a result is anomalous rather than just noting that it is. Those are teachable marks, and they are the ones careful candidates collect while others guess.
Classes are live and capped small, matched to each student’s tier so the chemistry is always stretching but never out of reach.
