Statistics O Level Cambridge online classes

Expert online Statistics tuition for Cambridge International (CAIE) O Level — covering every topic from the 4040 syllabus with exam-focused teaching.

How we teach Statistics

Cambridge O Level Statistics (4040) is unusual — a full O Level given over entirely to handling data, examined in two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes carrying 100 marks each, with a calculator expected throughout. Two practical points are worth knowing before planning a course: it is examined in the November series only, and it is open to private candidates.

The syllabus is deliberately applied. It opens with data and its collection — simple random, systematic, stratified and quota sampling, how bias arises and is avoided, and the design of open and closed questions — then works through tabular and diagrammatic representation, grouped and cumulative frequency distributions, and the standard measures of centre and spread. From there it reaches material that appears in few other school courses at this level: crude and standardised rates applied to death, fertility and accident data; weighted aggregate index numbers and their limitations; moving averages and seasonal variation in time series; and lines of best fit derived by the method of semi-averages. It closes with elementary probability and the expectation of a discrete distribution. There is no normal distribution, no hypothesis testing and no formal regression — those belong to A Level.

Between 85 and 90 per cent of the marks are for knowledge and technique, with the remainder for interpretation, which tells you where the effort belongs: choosing a suitable method, calculating accurately, and setting out the working in full, since essential working must be shown for full marks. Sessions are live and capped small, so every line of a student’s method gets checked.

Frequently asked questions

Which syllabus code does this Cambridge O Level Statistics class follow?

We teach the official Cambridge specification, syllabus code 4040, working directly from the specification document — the same content your child follows at school.
