This First Language syllabus develops learners’ ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively. They learn how to employ a wide-ranging vocabulary, use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed. Learners are also encouraged to read widely, for their own enjoyment and to develop an appreciation of how writers achieve their effects. The syllabus also complements other areas of study by encouraging skills of more general application.
This book comprises comprehension passages, four types of essays, and prose and poetry. Comprehension passages included in this book cover all the topics prescribed by CAIE. Similarly, questions asked for each comprehension passage are constructed with additional information on the pattern of CAIE. Besides this, one comprehension passage is provided with all its questions answered on the basis of given additional information as a sample unit.
In this book, not only four types of essays (Argumentative, Discursive, Descriptive, and Narrative) have been thoroughly explained but also contents to be included in each paragraph are elaborated through diagrams and charts. To enable the students to understand the specific type of content required for a specific type of essay, two sample essays have been provided for each type. For practice, a number of topics along with guidelines have also been provided with each essay type.
Unseen texts have been selected from classical and contemporary literature on a variety of topics. To fulfill the requirement of CAIE, selected prose texts have been summarized. For the guidance of students, one text of each prose and poetry has been included with answered questions in the light of the given points. This will enable students to base their answers on the provided points as required by CAIE.
